Most WDT tools leave you holding the portafilter steady with one hand while you stir with the other. This one holds itself. Ten magnets in the base grip the basket, so the needles move the grounds and nothing else moves at all.

Depth is set by turning the head, clockwise to go deeper, counterclockwise to pull back. Find the setting that suits your basket and dose and it stays there. Between shots the needle retracts into the base, which you will appreciate the first time you reach into a drawer for a loose WDT tool and pull out a bent one.

This is the expensive end of the WDT shelf, and what you are paying for is the magnetic lock and the depth adjustment. If you stir freehand and your shots already run even, you do not need it.
